The Recreational Navigator training course, in the category of Sailor promoted by Do It Better, aims to lead trainees to develop skills that allow them to govern recreational vessels, in accordance with the legislation in force – DL nº 93/2018 of 13 November . This course allows you to obtain from the DGRM, General Directorate of Natural Resources, Safety and Maritime Services, the navigation chart of this category.
The Sailor courseenables the holder to command an ER (Recreational Vessel), up to 12m in length, in daytime navigation, at a maximum distance of 3 miles from the coast and 10 miles from a harbor.
Requirements: Be at least 16 years old for the Sailor’s license; know how to swim;

Program Contents (30h)
Theoretical Part – 20 hours
- Recapitulation of the subjects in the Beginner course program;
- Applicable aspects of the Recreational Boating Regulation. Capacities conferred by the sailor’s license. Mandatory documentation and taxes. Surveys Minimum distances to keep when sailing along the beach. Inland waterway navigation;
- Fundamental characteristics of a vessel. Types of recreational craft;
- Nomenclature and palamenta of small boats;
- Means of propulsion and government;
- General information about tides, currents and winds. Consult a tide table;
- General information about anchors and moorings; your maneuver;
- Anchoring maneuver. Background nature. Choice of anchorage;
- Basic navigation rules to avoid collisions. Notion of constant marking;
- Basics of government and maneuver. Signaling;
- Security on board. Individual and vessel safety;
- Elementary knowledge of meteorology. Beaufort scale;
- Basics of first aid;
- Brief knowledge of maritime ceremonies;
- Basic knowledge of communications in the maritime mobile service. Notion of emergency and emergency procedures;
- Knowledge of the meaning of the «A» and «B» flags of the International Signal Code (CIS);
- Generic notions about engines. User maintenance;
- Preservation of the marine environment. Caring for burnt oils, waste water, non-biodegradable waste, use of biodegradable oils.
Practical Part – 10 hours
- Rigging a rowing, sailing or motor vessel;
- Driving and maneuvering a rowing, sailing or motor vessel;
- Man maneuver overboard; collecting a buoy simulating the castaway;
- Mooring, mooring and docking maneuvers;
- Maneuvers to dock and leave a buoy or anchored vessel;
- Fire prevention and fighting; use of fire extinguishers;
- Elementary works of sailor art;
- Basic notions of use and maintenance of engines.
The Course for Sailor allows trainees to acquire skills for navigating vessels, according to the criteria defined by the DGRM.
