The Recreational Navigator course, in the category of Local Employer promoted by Do It Better, aims to lead trainees to the development of skills that allow them to govern recreational vessels, in accordance with the legislation in force – DL nº 93/2018 of 13 November. This course allows you to obtain from the DGRM, General Directorate of Natural Resources, Safety and Maritime Services, the navigation chart of this category.
TheLocal Employer course enables the holder to the command of ER (Embarcações Recreio) to sail in sight of the coast, up to a maximum distance of 25 miles from any harbor and 6 miles from the coast.
Requirements: Be at least 18 years old and know how to swim.

Program Contents (40h)
Theoretical part – 30 hours
- Review of the subjects of the Sailor course;
- Applicable legislation; Earth shape and dimensions. Terrestrial sphere. Lines and points of the terrestrial sphere. Greenwich Mean Time. Ecuador. Arc measurements. Latitude and longitude. Notion of mile. Cardinal points. The direction at sea. Bow and heading. Dejection. Knot notion. Distance and speed mediation; General information about maritime navigation charts. Merchant card. Distance mediation. Scales of charts. Classification of cards. Defeats Defeat loxodrome and its layout on the merchant card. Position lines. Threading, alignment, azimuth, distance, bathymetric;
- Odometers. Verification of its operation;
- Terrestrial magnetism. Declination. Detour. Its causes and consequences. Hand and government needles. Deviation tables. Verification of the correct operation of a needle;
- Headlights and beacons;
- Estimated navigation, coastal and in restricted waters. Effects of currents. Degree of confidence in the position. Importance of visual navigation. Navigation errors;
- Tides, currents and winds. Use of the tide table. Calculation of the probe by the hour;
- General information about radar and its use in navigation and to avoid collisions;
- General information about GPS. Using the GPS. Errors and notion of Datum. Electronic letters
- General information about probes. Its use and verification of its correct functioning;
- Navigation and maneuver rules of the international regulation to avoid collisions at sea;
- Knowledge of the subjects contained in the examination program to obtain the restricted certificate of radiotelephone operator. GMDSS Convention;
- General knowledge of meteorology. Meteorological information on board;
- Anchoring, mooring and dropping maneuvers from a pier, buoy or other vessel;
- Safety on board and accident prevention. Life-saving means and equipment. Abandon the ship. Summary notions of first aid;
- General information about engines. Use and maintenance by the user. Most frequent breakdowns.
Practical Part – 10 hours
- Command and governance of a sailing or motor vessel;
- Correct use of communication equipment;
- Correct use of navigation equipment. Verification of the accuracy of the elements provided by the equipment;
- Execution of elementary works of sailor art, chosen from among those with current practical application.
